Jarmo Julkunen

Jarmo Julkunen (b. 1973), the province artist for music in Häme, is one of Finland’s most versatile musicians. His instrument selection includes modern guitars and the mandolin but also a number of period instruments such as the lute, vihuela and Baroque guitar. He  performs regularly both as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles. He has worked with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, the Finnish Baroque Orchestra,  Avanti!, the Tapiola Sinfonietta and Pipoka.

Composing is only one facet of Jarmo Julkunen’s career as a musician. His works include the operetta Viivi ja Wagner (Viivi and Wagner), based on a popular Finnish comic strip and premiered at the Helsinki Festival in 2006, and the musical play Raimo Reiska Raksa performed at the Helsinki City Theater in 2008. He has also written music for the wide range of instruments that he himself performs on.
